Russell Powers Castell.....born on this night....the longest night of the year (Winter Solstice), 8 whole years ago. I can truly not imagine our lives without him. He is sincere and thoughtful, clever and giddy, creative and spunky....good big brother, excellent helper, word smith, sous chef in the making...and well, one of the brightest lights of my life. Thankyou dear God for bringing us this little light....may his light continue to shine brightly for you.

Sophie my dear celebrated her 10th birthday this week. How can this be? I have no idea how 10 whole years have snuck by me that fast. They have been very sneaky, those 10 years. We had two parties to celebrate....one with just us'ns and the other for Sophie and couple of her girl buddies.

Just when you thought your heart was full to bursting....something else swell happens and your blessings are too many to count.
Last weekend my MIL invited us to dinner and had big brother over to her house to work on some projects....such was the ruse. Little did I knew that Russell had been hatching a plan....
Russell planned a birthday party for his baby sister. He had wanted it to be on her "birth" day proper, but was disappointed to find out that mommy wasn't supposed to leave the house that soon. So, undaunted and with much assistance from my wonderous MIL, he threw a party for his newest sibling...complete with decorations, lights, candles and a cake. He even had his Gram buy me my favorite brand of Veggier Burger and had steak on the menu for his dad and the rest of the carnivores.
Parenting is not always easy, but the sacrifices are so small in comparison to the rewards. I love you Russell.
Last night my dd9 had her appendix out. We've been making jokes about how she's just like Madeline. She's such a sweet thing. She tearfully told me tonight that she felt different from her siblings all day...she doesn't truly care for the notoriety...no Madeline stage hogging for my Sophie. She was so brave throughout the ordeal. My dh tells me that all of the hospital staff commented repeatedly on how smart she is. I, of course, know how absolutely true that is, however, she didn't have much opportunity to shine. What they saw was how poised she is, how gentle, how sensitive, how well-mannered and welllll...just downright good. She's good as gold, that girl. Thank you God for this little hiccup in our paths, my Sophie is fine in every sense of the word, and I have had cause to stop and ponder on what fineness truly is. She is growing into a lovely young lady. I am truly blessed.
