Is there an award for that? There ought to be.....!
This is a hunk of the big bad tree that smooshed our house this past summer. We couldn't let this opportunity slip by. Soooo, we dated the rings and made some educated guesses about the thick and thin rings...and the irregularities. Nature Scope Trees are Terrific is pretty cool, too.
We made a to-scale represenatation of the Solar System this week with straw-flags....each step being representative of a heap of miles....can't remember the calculations. It wrapped all the way around the house.......Sophie took Jack on a tour of the planets.....he waved at each and did his best approximation with the winsome 2-year-old lisp...."He-yo Neptune.......He-yo Yupiter.....He-Yo Sad-ooon".
This is sooooo why I homeschoo.

Who says school can't be fun? We've just begun studying volcanoes and decided we needed some hands-on reinforcement of some rather abstract concepts. Yessssss....we can conceptualize magma and it's runniness....and that when it hardens it forms rock, but we must see for ourselves what this is realllllly like. So, while we were at it, we thought we might as well add some chocolate. Make up one batch of simple toffee...stir and observe magma. Next, pour into buttered pan...add some nuts (for mommy), some chocolate for good measure and let harden. Observe igneous rock. We feel much the more enlightene
